GLIMPSE OF WORKS IN SANSKRIT LITERATURE
- THE VEDAS:
- There are four vedas:- Rigveda, Yajurveda,Samaveda and Atharvaveda.
- Rigveda is the oldest literature in the world. Its age is not established and cannot be established. Maxmuller opines 'No power on this earth can ever determine the date of the Rigveda'.
2. Aithihaasica kavyas (Historical kavyas):
- Ramayana: The story of Lord Rama, composed by Maharshi Valmiki . It contains 24000 shlokas (couplets).
- Mahabharatha: The story of Kouravas and Pandavas. Composed by Vedavyaasa. It contains one lakh shlokas.
3. Puranas:
- Mainly there are 18 puranas.
